Team confidence assessment: the TCQ™ measures your team twice

A team confidence assessment shows why your team performs the way it does. First, the Team Confidence Quotient (TCQ™) measures trust, communication and alignment through 21 causal factors. Then it benchmarks each factor against global team norms. After you intervene, it measures again, so you can prove the development on the same yardstick that found the gaps.

The definition

What is a team confidence assessment?

A team confidence assessment measures the causal factors that make teams perform sustainably. However, it does not capture how the team feels this month. Instead, it reads the standing conditions of trust, communication and alignment that decide how the team performs every month. Finally, the Team Confidence Quotient (TCQ™) reads 21 such factors and bands each one as Confident, Needs Nudging or Derailer. Then it benchmarks the team against global norms.

Seven designs the TCQ™ as a change instrument, not a scorecard. As a result, every causal factor is a lever that the team can name and work. Thus team confidence measurement leads to action, not just a score. Meanwhile, members spend about ten minutes online, in multiple languages, and responses stay confidential through aggregation. Moreover, the TCQ™ is built to run twice. That is why this team confidence diagnostic stays useful after the debrief. It can prove that the development worked.

Trust & Relationships

Seven factors cover the human foundation. First come reliability and candour about values, then help freely asked and offered, integrity and bonds beyond work.

Communication

Seven factors cover the conversation layer. First come honesty and feedback across levels, then constructive conflict, calling out and directness over back-channels.

Alignment

Seven factors cover shared direction. First come realistic plans and role clarity, then common purpose, a "we" over an "I" and a shared view of the big picture.

Together, the three dimension scores give the team confidence index, the headline number you track from round to round.

Inside the instrument

Team health assessment: what the 21 factors look like

A team health assessment helps only when its questions are specific enough to act on. Below are two of the 21 statements from each dimension. Then members rate every statement on a 10-point scale.

Trust & Relationships

T1

Members are comfortable soliciting and offering help whenever needed.

T4

Members are reliable: they do what they say they will.

Communication

C3

Members give developmental feedback irrespective of work levels or seniority.

C4

Members feel comfortable confronting conflict and handling it constructively.

Alignment

A2

Team members are clear about what is expected of their role and responsibilities.

A4

There is more "we" rather than "I" in the team.

Three bands turn 21 numbers into an agenda

First, every factor receives a score. Next, the TCQ™ places that score in one of three bands. As a result, the team knows what is fine and what is on fire.

6.1 to 10Confident

The factor supports performance. Therefore it needs maintenance, not rescue.

4.1 to 6.0Needs Nudging

The factor leaks confidence. Therefore it deserves a targeted intervention.

1.0 to 4.0Derailer

The factor actively undermines the team. As a result, the development plan starts here.

Who this is for

Three teams that need a team health check

Most teams know something is off. However, few can say which lever is off, or by how much. Because a team confidence assessment names the lever, these three situations bring teams to the TCQ™ most often.

The team that performs but leaks

Results arrive, yet everything costs more than it should. First, decisions get relitigated, and conflict waits until it explodes. Meanwhile, issues travel around people instead of to them. As a result, the factor scores name the leak precisely.

The new or newly merged team

A restructure, a merger or a fresh leadership team puts six people in one room. However, they have not yet earned each other's trust. In this case, the baseline round shows which foundations exist and which you must build.

The team investment that needs a receipt

Eventually, a sponsor will ask what changed after an offsite, a coaching engagement or a working-agreements reset. When you run the TCQ™ before and after, the answer is a movement on 21 factors, not a feeling.

The comparison

Team pulse survey versus the TCQ™ team effectiveness report

A pulse tells you how the team feels. In contrast, a team effectiveness report built on the TCQ™ tells you why the team performs the way it does. Moreover, it shows whether your development work changed anything.

What is included

Team diagnostic report India: six deliverables, two rounds, one yardstick

First, here is what you receive along the way. Finally, every engagement closes with a team diagnostic report India teams can act on.

The baseline round

First, all 21 factors are measured across the team. Each member needs about ten minutes online, so responses are aggregated for confidentiality.

The banded team report

Every factor and dimension is scored and banded against global team norms. Consequently, the reading arrives with its interpretation built in.

The team debrief

Then a senior practitioner works the report with the team itself. Together you name the pattern, prioritise the levers and start the conversation the scores were built for.

The development plan

Next, each flagged factor is paired with an intervention, an owner, an expected movement and a re-measure date. Moreover, you build it with the team, not for it.

The second round

Then the identical instrument runs again about six months later. Because the yardstick never changes, the movement reflects the work rather than memory or mood.

The before and after comparison

Finally, the team assessment report shows both rounds on one yardstick. It adds dimension movement, factor-level change and an honest read on what did not move. See the full sample report for exactly what lands.

How it works

Measure, develop, re-measure

A team confidence diagnostic works best as a four-step cycle. First you measure, then you develop, and finally you prove the movement.

Round 1

Baseline

First, the team completes the 21-factor team confidence assessment, ten minutes each and confidential. Then the banded report lands against global norms.

Debrief

Name the levers

A senior practitioner debriefs the report with the team. Together you decide which factors hold, which leak and which two or three deserve the next two quarters.

Develop

Run the plan

Next, targeted interventions follow the flagged factors, such as conflict capability, feedback cadence or role charters. Each one has an owner and a date.

Round 2

Prove the movement

The identical instrument runs again. Afterwards, the comparison shows what moved, what did not and what the next plan should attack.

Who benefits

What changes for the team leader, HR, the team and the sponsor

A team confidence assessment pays for itself the first time the team sees its own pattern. Seat by seat, here is what changes.

The team leader

Leadership by lever, not by vibe

Instead of sensing that something is off, the leader sees which of 21 factors is off, how far and against what norm. As a result, the development conversation starts from shared evidence rather than one person's diagnosis.

HR and OD

Team development gets a portfolio view

Run across teams, the TCQ™ shows which ones need intervention and of what kind. Then the second round shows what each intervention returned, so team-development spend graduates from ritual to portfolio.

The team

The unsaid becomes discussable

Back-channelling, avoided conflict and unclear roles are patterns that every team knows and no one wants to name first. Therefore the report names them from the team's own aggregated answers, and the conversation becomes safe to have.

The sponsor

Team investment with a receipt

Meanwhile, the offsite, the coach and the operating reset sit between two identical measurements. Therefore the team confidence index becomes the return slide for people work. It shows movement on the exact factors that the money targeted.

Evidence and applications

Why the TCQ™ is built to be believed

The evidence behind the instrument

  • Two decades of research. The 21 causal factors draw on research across a dozen industries into what makes teams perform sustainably. Therefore they come from evidence, not from a vendor brainstorm.
  • Causal factors, not symptoms. Every item is a lever that the team can work, so the bands show where to start.
  • Global team norms. Each score lands against how confident teams actually rate, factor by factor. As a result, good has a definition.
  • Before and after design. Because the identical instrument runs twice, the TCQ™ can prove its own value.
  • Senior practitioners. Because every round is debriefed with the team, the development plan comes from the factor data rather than a template.

Independent research points the same way. Google's re:Work study of team effectiveness names psychological safety as the most important dynamic. Moreover, Amy Edmondson's work on psychological safety and learning behaviour shows why it matters. Meanwhile, Seven has applied these ideas with 600+ organisations across 23 sectors. You can browse that client work in our case studies.

Where a team confidence assessment earns its place

  • Executive teams. The team that sets the tone measures its own confidence first.
  • Project and task-force teams. You baseline early, before delivery pressure hardens bad habits.
  • Virtual and hybrid teams. Meanwhile, the factors show whether distance is costing confidence.
  • Intact functional teams. Until now, the standing team has performed for years without once seeing its own pattern.
  • New and post-merger teams. First, the baseline shows which foundations exist and which you must build deliberately.
  • Offsites and team coaching. Round 1 gives the offsite its agenda. Round 2 then tells you whether it was an intervention or a holiday.

Where we work

The TCQ™ team confidence assessment runs online for teams anywhere in India. Debriefs happen in person in Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.

In practice, requests vary. Some leaders want a team health check Mumbai offices can run before an offsite. Others want team diagnostics India companies can repeat across several sites. Meanwhile, GCCs ask for a team confidence assessment India leadership teams can trust, and HR heads want a team diagnostic report Mumbai boards will read. Many also ask for a team effectiveness report India sponsors can compare year on year. Read more about our assessments and HR analytics practice.

Practical questions

The TCQ™ team confidence assessment, asked straight

What is a team confidence assessment, and what does the TCQ™ measure?

A team confidence assessment is a diagnostic of the conditions behind sustainable team performance. The Team Confidence Quotient (TCQ™) scores 21 causal factors across three dimensions: Trust & Relationships, Communication and Alignment. It bands each factor and benchmarks it against global team norms. As a result, the team sees where it stands and what that standing means.

What is the team confidence index?

The team confidence index, also called the team confidence score, is the headline result for a team, built from the three dimension scores on the 10-point scale. It gives a sponsor one number to track from round to round, and global norms turn it into a team confidence benchmark. However, the real value sits underneath, in the 21 factor scores that show which lever to pull.

What do the three bands mean?

Confident (6.1 to 10) means the factor supports performance and needs maintenance, not rescue. Needs Nudging (4.1 to 6.0) marks a factor that leaks confidence and deserves a targeted intervention. Derailer (1.0 to 4.0) marks a factor that actively undermines the team, so it is the first place the development plan goes.

How does the before and after comparison work?

The team confidence assessment uses the identical instrument twice. A baseline round comes first, and a second round follows after the development work, typically about six months later. Because the yardstick never changes, the movement is attributable. The comparison shows dimension change, factor-by-factor change and, deliberately, what did not move.

What does the survey involve for team members?

Each member completes a short team confidence survey online in about ten minutes, in multiple languages where needed. Responses are reported in aggregate, so no individual answer is shown. That is why members answer honestly about sensitive patterns such as conflict avoidance and back-channelling.

How is the TCQ™ different from a team pulse survey?

A pulse survey tells you how the team feels this month. In contrast, the TCQ™ is a team confidence assessment tool: it measures the causal conditions behind performance and bands them against global norms. Moreover, it re-runs on the same yardstick. Many teams therefore keep their pulse and add the TCQ™ to answer the question the pulse cannot: why.

Which teams can take a team health assessment?

Any team that must work as one can take it, whether you call it a team health survey or a team health check. That includes executive, project, virtual, hybrid, intact functional and post-merger teams. It suits homogeneous and mixed groups alike. For a view across many teams, we also run a multi-team programme with comparative baselines.

How is the TCQ™ priced?

Pricing follows the shape of the engagement: a single round with debrief and development plan, or the full before and after cycle, for one team or several. Platform fees pass through transparently, and the practitioner debrief is always included. After a short context brief, you receive a fixed quote before the first survey link goes out.

Measure your team twice, and prove the work in between

Start your team confidence assessment with a context brief. Then we name the team, schedule the baseline and put a senior practitioner in the room for every debrief.
