Frequently Asked Questions About Emotional Intelligence
What is Emotional Intelligence?

In layman terms, this means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively) and learning how to manage those emotions for ourselves and others.

What are the core competencies of Emotional Intelligence?

There are 5 characteristics that make up emotional intelligence:

  1. Self-Awareness: Knowing how you feel and how your emotions and your actions can affect the people around you.
  2. Self-Regulation: Staying in control despite experiencing varying emotions.
  3. Drive: The motivation or volition of someone to do things.
  4. Social Awareness (Empathy): The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
  5. Social Management: The skills of interpersonal communication and relationship management.
Why is EQ important?

Emotional intelligence (EI) is considered to be one of the most desirable characteristics in a leader. One study found that individuals with high EI could be 40% to 122% more effective in positions involving influencing, managing, negotiating and/or serving others. The TTI EQ provides a simple model for people to understand and develop EI.

Why focus on “Emotions” in Business?

Emotions are key drivers of our behaviors. Businesses today are realising that how people behave and show up at the workplace are important ingredients in employee engagement and organisational culture. Behavioral competencies are known to be critical differentiators of higher performance levels at work. Ergo, managing emotions and behaviors is emerging as a germane skill for leaders looking at creating high performance teams.

How is EQ Different from IQ?

Emotional intelligence, or emotional quotient (EQ), is an individual’s ability to identify, evaluate, control, and express emotions. While there is no clear definition of IQ yet, by and large, IQ, the intelligence quotient, is used to determine the ability to learn, understand, and apply information to skills, use logical reasoning, understand words and math, use abstract and spatial thinking, etc.

Unlike IQ, EQ is a learned competency and can be developed over a period of time. EQ is also known to be a major contributor to the overall performance of a manager or leader.

Can I assess my Emotional Intelligence?

There are several assessments used globally for measure one’s Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Quotient (EQ) is the metric used to identify an individual’s level of emotional intelligence. One can measure EQ through our highly validated TTI Emotional Quotient™ or through a multi-rater 3600ESQ™ Assessment.

The TTI Emotional Quotient™ report is available as a 13-page coaching and development report. The TTI EQ has been designed as a stand-alone tool.
